Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Where have you gone, Steve McQueen?

Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Whoo woo woo.

"The Blob of Stupidity" is not to be confused with "The Cloud of Unknowing," though there is something of a relationship, in that the latter is a mystical book of Christian philosophy which holds that, in order to know God, you have to stop trying to rationally "understand" Him.

But, while there is folly in attempting to rationalize that which doesn't exist in time and space, there's a much greater folly in refusing to even try to understand that which does, and the Blob of Stupidity is currently spreading across our nation, eating us alive.

Lalo Alcaraz leads off our review of stupidity with Dear Leader's latest threat or promise or policy proposal or whatever the hell that was, which is to shut down the government if Congress does not agree to pay for the wall which Mexico is going to pay for and that won't cost American taxpayers a dime.

I particularly like the way Alcaraz suggests that being able to find Mexico, or the United States, on a map, could conceiveably help shape a coherent policy, but then who needs coherent policies when your believers have all been gobbled up by the Blob of Stupidity?

As for the Wall itself, well, it's not hard to understand. We all know that Morgan Freeman is the voice of intelligent, reasonable analysis, and so we'll let him explain the Wall:

Meanwhile, somewhere else we can't find on a map …

Here's Jeff Danziger's commentary on Afghanistan — that's Vietnam vet Jeff Danziger, I would note, because he does have standing to comment on the topic of chickenhawks. And he was in intelligence, so he's got standing to comment on that, too, or its absence.

Note how he uses exaggeration to make his point … oh, wait a minute … okay, maybe he doesn't. Here's a commentary that popped up on a friend's Facebook page yesterday, about Colin Kaepernick:

I don't watch sports, but I think it's a bunch of BS that he does not stand up for the national anthem. I do when it's being played. Maybe it's because I'm not some whining millionaire who hangs out with his millionaire friends. My friends are real people and many of them went in the military and more than one of them died. I'm to understand that guy is a mediocre player he's not bad, but he's not that great either.

This guy doesn't watch sports and doesn't exactly know who Colin Kaepernick is, but he's a patriot because many of his friends — who, I would point out, are real people — have gone in the military and more than one of them died.

The point being that he stands up when the national anthem is being played, though I'm not sure that's the kind of "standing up" that guys like Danziger talk about.

Whatever the weather, we can count on snowflakes …

Koterba
Jeffrey Koterba issued an apology for this cartoon, because it apparently offended so many people.

300px-United_States_Seventh_Fleet_-logo_(hi-res)Granted, I'm not a veteran, but my son, a Seventh Fleet veteran, has been dismayed and very critical of the series of disasters in his old command.

I've also got a grandson about to ship out with the Navy and I'd like them to get things back on the beam (naval term meaning at right angles to the keel) before he steps aboard.

I don't know what offended so many people; there are no comments on the cartoon and I cannot imagine what Koterba's offense might have been, since there's no humor or making light of tragedy in his piece.

And I admire the way shit rolls uphill in the Navy, that the people in charge are, with very rare exceptions, held accountable for screw ups.

We'll have to see what happened with the McCain, but the report on the Fitzgerald is damning and not only are its officers no longer in command, but, with the latest catastrophe, the commander of the fleet has been removed.

So Koterba's placing the issue on the steps of the Academy is more a plain statement of naval policy than a political comment to be disagreed with or offended by.

If the Navy isn't closing its eyes and pretending nothing happened, I don't see why the rest of us ought to.

Except, y'know, if you've been swallowed by the Blob.

And of course …

LeeAs Clay Jones notes, ESPN shifted announcer Robert Lee off the University of Virginia game and assigned him to cover a different game, though, contrary to all the media chatter, ESPN was simply attempting to sidestep the Blob of Stupidity but somehow blundered into it.

Well, if you could simply sidestep the Blob, there wouldn't have been much of a movie then, would there?

Okay, yeah, I've seen the movie and it wasn't much of a movie anyway, but that's not my point. Or maybe it is.

Mr lee
Now I'm wondering if the young announcer uses his full first name, which might provoke jokes if he showed up at the UVA campus, in order to avoid using his nickname and being confused with Bob Ley, who spells his last name differently but pronounces it the same and has massive seniority at ESPN.

I dunno. They all look the same to me.

Now here's your stupid moment of zen:

(I probably shouldn't use this, because it's by the Bobbettes, and so people
might think they are the Bobbette Lees at the center of the controversy.
