Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Hey Rube!

ReubenWhile I was poking around in 1913 looking for something you'll see Sunday, I came across these pieces which you'll see now.

They're by a fellow named Rube Goldberg, of whom I think it might be said that he "was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist best known for his zany invention cartoon" and very likely was.

He's also known for an award that bears his name and for several that don't but are known as "Reubens" anyway. A hero ain't nothin' but a sandwich, but a Reuben is a little more complicated, though it's also … well, never mind.

Anyway, I don't think you'll be able to read any of these without you at least click on them to open them in a larger box and perhaps download them completely instead — I scanned them large, but the microfilm was still micro — and so because you may have to work a little harder,I won't take up any more of your time.

I respect the effort you are putting in and also I have a plane to catch.

So here are a dozen Rubes, chosen neither at random nor as 'best of" but in the order they popped up in the newspapers 85 years ago:

And I wanted to feature Ding Darling but he was indisposed, being in the midst of moving back to Des Moines from NYC.

  1. There’s a short story by Ring Lardner where the narrator mentions running into a friend who has some new “I’m the Guy”s for him. (I thought there was a section of those in 10,000 Jokes, Toasts, and Stories, but nope. Maybe I was thinking of Little Audreys or Little Willies.)
